Some people have to have a visa before they can travel to Europe. If you are required to have a visa, you will get what's called a Schengen Visa. People Who Need a Visa
Whether you are required to have a Schengen Visa depends on your nationality. It does not matter if you are a permanent resident of another country. If you are a citizen of one of the countries on this list, you must have a Schengen Visa to enter or travel through any of the 25 countries that have joined together to enforce Schengen Visa rules.

Who Does Not Need a Visa?
People from certain countries are not required to obtain a Schengen Visa to enter and travel through the 25 Schengen Area countries. Also, if you have a valid residence permit for any country in the European Economic Area, you do not have to have a Schengen Visa.

People of certain nationalities must have an Airport Transit Visa if they want to travel through an airport in a Schengen Area country.
However, there are some exceptions to the rules. Sometimes you can be a citizen of a country required to have an Airport Transit Visa, but you will still not have to get one because of your personal situation.
